At Viridian, we love glass.
Glasstalks is a place to share inspiration, tips and news on all things glass - a one stop destination for homeowners, designers, architects and natural light enthusiasts.

When building your home, often the space allocated for a bathroom can be limiting, particularly when it comes to ensuites and guest bathrooms. Apartment living can also be particularly restrictive where the space doesn’t lend itself to expansive bathrooms fit for a king.

So what can you do to enhance your space and give the illusion of a much more spacious area? Here are some tips and tricks that are easily achieved.

1/ Utilise natural light

This seems like an obvious one but it’s simple and true. By installing a large window, your bathroom will instantly feel bigger and brighter. If you require some privacy, use a lighter blind that is retractable. For the best results invest in insulated glass, not only will it let the light in but will block out outside noise and keep your bathroom much warmer in cooler months.

2/ Use a white colour palette

Invest in a good quality lick of paint preferably in a white or lighter shade. The light will reflect beautifully off the white and the lighter colour scheme will enhance the feeling of space in your small bathroom.

3/Make sure your design has continuity

If you have tiles on the floor, stretch them out to cover the surface area of the shower also. This will create a feeling of openness. If you section off the shower with a different tile or colour it can often create a disconnect in the aesthetic and appear more cluttered.

4/Invest in a mirror

Utilising a large mirror in your bathroom will benefit your space instantly. They not only look great and serve a practical purpose, they also reflect light and can make the tiniest rooms feel bigger. Try and avoid framed mirrors and for the best result a built-in mirror is recommended. 5/ Clear the clutter

Storage is your friend when it comes to achieving a sense of openness in your bathroom. Clear the decks and tuck items away in cupboards. Try and install a storage solution that can double as a bench – like a ladder with shelves.
