At Viridian, we love glass.
Glasstalks is a place to share inspiration, tips and news on all things glass - a one stop destination for homeowners, designers, architects and natural light enthusiasts.

Glass – we pretty much take it for granted, right? But if you take a look, there is a lot more to glass than meets the eye. Here’s a few things you might not know.

There are different types of glass

Think there’s only one type of glass – ‘ordinary sheet glass’? Well think again! The range of glass products currently on the market is extensive. There’s glass that is energy efficient, that can reduce noise, there’s even a product that can clean itself! And it doesn’t stop there. Glass is toughened to make it safer, and it can be patterned or even embedded with colour.

The many options available help designers and architects design a home that suits your taste, lifestyle and circumstances. Live too close to traffic? Acoustic glass is the answer. Want a more sustainable home? Time to explore the benefits of energy-efficient glass.

The design possibilities of glass have expanded

Gone are the days when glass was only a small part of an overall design. Recent developments in the way it is manufactured has increased its load-bearing capabilities. That means it can be used in big ways – we’re talking facades, balustrades and curtain walls.

The increased building flexibility of glass has resulted in some truly beautiful designs in recent years and has helped connect homes to the outside world.

Not all glass can be cleaned the same way

Before you get out the Windex and apply a bit of elbow grease, it’s worth taking a few seconds to check whether the cleaning instructions you are familiar with are applicable to the glass in your home. As previously mentioned, there are a lot of different types of glass on the market and where it’s safe to employ one cleaning method to one product, on another it can cause staining, marking or even damage.

Viridian supply cleaning instructions for all their products. However, if you’re ever unsure, it’s best to consult the supplier, a reputable glazier or even a professional window cleaner before any glass cleaning is undertaken.

We hope that after reading this, you’ve not only increased your understanding of glass, but have come to appreciate it more for what it is –  an essential and beautiful part of modern architecture.
